On the frozen banks of Wounded Knee Creek Lakota Chief Big Foot and his followers huddled together hungry and exhausted. Driven off their lands they surrendered and were surrounded by the U.S. 7th Calvary that had been ordered to peacefully escort them to a reservation. There was tension in the air. Troops feared the Sioux and the powerful Ghost Dances that spread through the Dakotas as the Indians frantically danced and prayed for the return of their way of life. A single shot rang out from a Calvary gun and chaos erupted. When the smoke cleared peaceful Chief Big Foot and all of the Lakota lay dead in the snow. As the sun set on South Dakota a single Native pony wandered the frozen plains in search of his beloved people who would dance no more. This Iowa artist postponed a career in the arts to raise a family but has found her passion for painting rekindled with The Trail of Painted Ponies. Wounded Knee won first place in the Paint Your Own Pony contest held at the International Museum of the Horse in Lexington Kentucky in July of 2007. I first passed up this pony because it wasn't "colorful" enough for me but had to have it once I read its hang tag. The sad story tore my heart out and the pony's unique look perfectly fit the description on the tag. You can almost see and feel what the poor horse was experiencing with the cold wind and snow blowing its mane over its eyes, obstructing its view while it vainly searches for its master. This pony stands out as the only one so far whose story tag pulls at the heartstrings. It deserves a special award for the emotional nerve it's touched in so many people. Congratulations to its designer and to the TOPP for this outstanding pony. It stands alone in a category of its own.

At first glance this looked like any other horse, but after reading the story, my heart went out to him. Just imagine how sad and cold and lonely he is. Who wouldn't want to help him? Thanks for the history lesson. I will be adding him to my collection.

The suspension of the horse in motion coupled with the covering of snow on both the horse and blanket render to the story behind this horse. You are left to imagine the hardship of this animal all in one glance!

Like the collector from Finchwood Farms, this pony makes you believe that you are there too. It has a sad story tag that made me fill up, this pony touches a nerve. The plight of the American Indians touches my heart and I'm from the UK!!

I just got my "Wounded Knee" Pony, and I have to say, this is one of the most beautiful ponies I have. I love this guy, with his long thick mane and beautiful buckskin color, and the snow really makes him gorgeous. I was just thrilled when I opened the box and saw how beautiful he was. I love the new pose too. He is simply beautiful in every way. I have already been telling my friends to order one for themselves.
